Revaxis DTP vaccine

The DTP vaccine is a single booster that tops up your protection against diphtheria, tetanus and polio. Most of us had these jabs at school. However, protection fades, so travellers often need a booster if their last one was more than 10 years ago.

Three diseases, one injection

Diphtheria

A bacterial infection of the nose and throat that spreads through coughs, sneezes and close contact. It can block the airway and affect the heart.

Tetanus

Tetanus bacteria live in soil and enter the body through cuts, bites and burns. They cause painful muscle spasms, including in the jaw, which is why people call it lockjaw.

Polio

A virus that spreads through contaminated food and water, or close contact. It can cause muscle weakness and, in a small number of cases, paralysis.

Having your DTP vaccine

We use Revaxis, given as 1 injection in the upper arm. It protects you for around 10 years and costs £45. If you are planning several trips, it is worth checking when you last had a booster, as it may already be due.

Side effects are usually mild. Expect a sore arm for a day or two, and possibly a slight temperature or headache.
