Going on Hajj or Umrah, starting university or travelling to parts of Africa? The meningitis ACWY vaccine protects against 4 types of meningococcal bacteria, called A, C, W and Y. We give it in Leith and provide the certificate you need for Hajj and Umrah visas.
Why meningococcal disease is serious
These bacteria can cause meningitis, which is swelling of the lining around the brain and spinal cord. They can also cause sepsis, a blood infection. Both can become life-threatening within hours. Survivors sometimes live with hearing loss, scarring or the loss of a limb.
The bacteria spread through close contact, such as coughing, sneezing and kissing. Many people carry them in the nose and throat without feeling ill, so large crowds and shared living spaces raise the risk.
Symptoms that need urgent help
- Fever, with cold hands and feet
- Severe headache and a stiff neck
- Dislike of bright lights
- Drowsiness or confusion
- Vomiting
- A rash that does not fade when you press a glass against it
If you notice these signs, call 999 or go to A&E straight away.
How the meningitis ACWY vaccine works
You need just 1 injection, and it costs £70. We use Nimenrix, which protects you for about 3 years. Try to have it at least 2 weeks before you travel. Saudi Arabia asks Hajj and Umrah pilgrims for proof of vaccination, so bring your travel dates and we will issue the certificate on the day.
More about the vaccine
The NHS MenACWY vaccine page explains who is offered it for free. If you are not eligible, you can book a private appointment with us, or see our other travel vaccinations.
