What the MMR vaccine protects against
The vaccine covers 3 illnesses in one injection: measles, mumps and rubella. All 3 spread very easily from person to person. Measles in particular can cause pneumonia, brain swelling and, rarely, death. Mumps can lead to hearing loss, and rubella is dangerous during pregnancy.
How measles spreads
Measles travels through coughs and sneezes, and the virus can stay in the air for a while. Someone with measles is infectious from about 4 days before the rash appears until 4 days after.
Early signs of measles
- High temperature
- Runny or blocked nose, sneezing and a cough
- Red, sore and watery eyes
- Small white spots inside the cheeks
- A blotchy rash, 2 to 4 days after the cold-like symptoms
Having your MMR vaccine with us
Adults need 2 doses, given at least a month apart, and 2 doses give long-term protection. Each dose costs £60. Ideally, have your first dose at least 2 weeks before you travel, so your body has time to respond.
If you do not know your vaccine history, it is safe to have the MMR vaccine again. Your pharmacist will check your health first, as it is not suitable during pregnancy.
