Hepatitis A vaccine

The hepatitis A vaccine is one of the most common jabs we give before a holiday. Hepatitis A is a liver infection that spreads through food and water contaminated with an infected person’s poo. It is rare in the UK, but it is common in many popular destinations.

Where hepatitis A is a risk

You are more likely to come across it in parts of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Central and South America. Street food, salads washed in tap water and ice in drinks are typical sources. Close contact with someone who has the infection can also spread it.

How it can make you feel

  • Fever and feeling generally unwell
  • Sickness, diarrhoea and stomach pain
  • Losing your appetite
  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice)

Most people recover within a few months. However, the illness can leave you feeling exhausted for weeks, and older adults have a higher chance of serious liver problems.

Your hepatitis A vaccine course

One injection gives you protection for your trip, and it usually starts to work within 2 to 4 weeks. A second dose 6 to 12 months later then gives long-lasting protection, often for 25 years. Each dose costs £70, and we keep the vaccine in stock, so you can usually have it the same day.

Good habits abroad

  • Drink bottled or properly treated water
  • Choose food that is freshly cooked and served hot
  • Peel fruit yourself and avoid salads washed in tap water
  • Wash your hands before eating

Side effects of the hepatitis A vaccine

A sore or red arm, a mild temperature and tiredness are the most common reactions. These normally settle within a few days. You can read more in the NHS guide to hepatitis A. Also, ask us about the hepatitis B vaccine if you need both, as a combined option is available.
