A hepatitis B vaccine protects you against a virus that attacks the liver. Unlike hepatitis A, it does not come from food. Instead, it passes through blood and other body fluids, so it matters most if you are travelling for a long time, working in healthcare or might need medical treatment abroad.
How hepatitis B spreads
- Sharing needles, razors or toothbrushes
- Unsterile medical, dental or tattoo equipment
- Unprotected sex
- From a mother to her baby at birth
The virus is found worldwide. However, rates are highest in East Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. Some people clear it on their own, while others carry it for life, which can lead to liver scarring or liver cancer over time.
Common symptoms
- Fever and extreme tiredness
- Feeling sick, vomiting or diarrhoea
- Tummy pain and loss of appetite
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes
