Emergency contraception can help prevent pregnancy if you have had unprotected sex or your usual contraception has failed. In Scotland, you can get the emergency pill free on the NHS from our pharmacy, without an appointment.
Your emergency contraception options
Levonorgestrel
This pill works best when taken within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected sex. The sooner you take it, the more effective it is.
ellaOne
This pill can be taken up to 120 hours (5 days) afterwards. It is often recommended if more than 3 days have passed.
A copper coil, fitted by a sexual health clinic within 5 days, is the most effective option of all. If you would like a coil, or it has been more than 5 days, we will help you find the right clinic quickly.
What happens in the pharmacy
Ask at the counter, and a pharmacist will speak to you in our private room. They will ask a few questions, for example when you had sex and what medicines you take, to choose the best pill for you. Everything you say stays confidential.
Read the NHS guide to emergency contraception for more detail, or see our wider sexual health services.
