A dengue fever vaccine may be an option if you have had dengue before and are heading back to the tropics. Dengue is now one of the most common infections in travellers returning to the UK from places like Thailand, Bali, India and the Caribbean.
What dengue does
Dengue spreads through bites from Aedes mosquitoes, which are most active in the daytime. Many people only feel mildly unwell. Others get a high fever, a severe headache, pain behind the eyes and aching joints, which is why it is nicknamed breakbone fever. A rash often follows a few days later.
A second dengue infection carries a higher risk of severe dengue, which can cause bleeding and needs hospital care.
Our dengue fever vaccine
We offer Qdenga, given as 2 injections 3 months apart, at £120 per dose. UK guidance currently recommends it mainly for people aged 4 and over who have had dengue in the past. So, your pharmacist will ask about your history and travel plans before deciding if the dengue fever vaccine suits you.
Bite prevention still matters
- Apply repellent through the day, not just at dusk
- Wear loose clothes that cover your arms and legs
- Stay in rooms with air conditioning or screens where you can
