
Human Papiloma Virus (HPV)
What is HPV
HPV is a viral infection that affects the skin and there are many different types. Some types of HPV infections can cause genital warts or cancer.
Symptoms
HPV does not usually cause any symptoms
Most people will not have any symptoms from an HPV infection. Some HPV infections cause small rough lumps (genital warts) that can appear on the vagina or anus and rarely the throat.
HPV infection that does not go away on its own can cause cahnges to cervical cells, which can lead to complications such as cancer if not treated.
Method of Administration
HPV vacination is given intramuscularly in 3 doses
Prevention
There is no method to fully protect yourself from HPV but there are measures you can take such as:
- Practice safer sex, condoms to help protect you against HPV
- The HPV vaccine, works best if you get vaccinated before becoming sexually active
- Protect your partner(s), let your partner know if you have HPV so that they can get tested too
Vaccination
Allow at least 2 weeks before travelling for vaccination to be effective
