Emergency Supplies

What is an Emergency Prescription?

An emergency supply is a service that allows a pharmacist to provide certain prescription medicines without a current prescription when there is an immediate need and it is not practical for the patient to obtain a prescription in time. This service helps prevent interruptions to essential treatment and supports continuity of care.

When might you need an Emergency Supply?

You may be eligible for an emergency supply if:

  • You have run out of your regular medication.
  • You have forgotten or lost your medication while travelling.
  • You are unable to obtain a prescription from your GP or prescriber before your next dose is due.
  • Stopping your medication suddenly could affect your health or wellbeing.
How does it work?

A pharmacist will assess your circumstances and determine whether an emergency supply is appropriate. They will consider factors such as:

  • Your previous medication history.
  • The type of medication required.
  • The urgency of your need.
  • Whether supplying the medication is safe and clinically appropriate.

Emergency supplies are provided at the pharmacist’s professional discretion and are subject to legal and clinical requirements.

Important Information
  • Not all medicines can be supplied as an emergency supply.
  • Controlled drugs and certain high-risk medicines may be subject to additional restrictions.
  • Proof of previous treatment may be required.
  • A consultation with the pharmacist may be necessary before medication can be supplied.
