Cholera

The safer way to travel...

Oral inactivated vaccine

What is Cholera

Dukoral is an oral vaccine used primarily to help protect against cholera, an intestinal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It is taken as a drink rather than an injection.

Key Points
  • What it protects against: Cholera caused by certain strains of Vibrio cholerae.
  • Who uses it: Travelers going to areas where cholera is present, and in some countries people at increased risk of exposure.
  • How it’s given: Usually as two doses for adults and older children, taken 1–6 weeks apart. Younger children may require an additional dose.
  • When to take it: The vaccination series should be completed at least about a week before potential exposure.
  • Effectiveness: It reduces the risk of cholera but does not provide 100% protection. Safe food, water, and hand hygiene remain important.
  • Side effects: Generally mild, such as stomach discomfort, nausea, diarrhea, or headache.

In some countries, Dukoral has also been promoted for partial protection against certain strains of traveler’s diarrhea caused by enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), although protection is limited and varies.
